Conscious Attention Economy Principles

In coordination with the United Nations (UN), I lead a multi-stakeholder working group that has produced Universal Principles for a Conscious Attention Economy. The purpose is to address the extractive economic pattern of global over-consumption and exponential technologies, that are wreaking havoc on human attention. The Conscious Attention Economy Principles offer building blocks that will support healthy technology innovation for the next generation conscious, mixed-reality world by infusing our digital experience with respect for the human and natural world.

Hola! I am Dr. Patricia Klauer

Since I was young I have been interested in the ‘subtext’ – what is not said. How does the ‘invisible world’ influence us moment to moment? I wrote back then, “If the Milky Way were not within me, how could I have seen it or known it?”

As a chiropractor I explored the complex interdependent systems of the human body. Any doctor will attest there is a mystery about us that, despite all of our science and knowledge, our examination and research, there is something in the ‘wholeness itself’ that defies quantification.

My spiritual teacher suggested that I explore technology. I had a deep aversion to it, having never learned to type or use a computer. An innately holistic thinker, I thought of it as the ultimate reductionist system and had no interest. Yet it was an invitation to explore the unknown, so I accepted.

I discovered the intricacy of our human bodies extends to our creations. The endless dynamic complexity of interdependent technology systems and influences – just like the human body – were at play in very similar ways. I discovered the technological world we create is as mysterious a part of nature as our own bodies and must be seen holistically as well.

Physicists have told us that matter is mostly composed of space. When we fail to include the invisible, the space between the atoms, between our words, between the notes played on a musical instrument, between the branches of a tree…we fail to apprehend the totality of ourselves, our world and any moment to moment situation.

I currently call home a quiet village on Lake Chapala, Mexico where I co-founded Foodbank Lakeside to address the region’s food poverty through partnering with local grocers and community volunteerism. I enjoy a simple yet fulfilling lifestyle within a warm-hearted community, maintaining a harmonious balance with an active professional life that often involves international travel.
